Mainland Football is the governing body of football in Nelson, North and Central Canterbury, Tasman, Marlborough and the West Coast, otherwise known as Federation 6 of New Zealand Football (NZF). Much like how Capital Football is organised for teams situated in the South of the North Island. Mainland Football currently involves around 20,000 members from 51 clubs and schools across the region, the regional competition associated with Federation 6 is the Mainland Premier League.

Since it was founded in 1998 the Mainland Premier League has been considered one of, if not the strongest league in the South Island. Since Christchurch United won the league in the year of its founding there has been much competition included that makes watching and betting on this football league even better.

How the Mainland Football League works

The Mainland Premier League takes place between March and August between 8 teams, this Mainland Football competition takes place over 21 rounds during which each team plays one another 3 times. The winner of the Mainland Premier league automatically qualifies to play the winner of the FootballSouth premier League in the South Island Championship.

Mainland Football team hoping for promotion to the Mainland Premier League will have to win the Canterbury Championship League title. This used to involve a play off between the winners of the Canterbury Championship and Nelson Bays Division 1, however expenses like travel costs mean the winner of Nelson Bays Division 1 automatically forfeits the play off.

Clubs that currently play in the Mainland Premier League include Cashmere Technical, Christchurch United, Coastal Spirit, Ferrymead Bays, Halswell united, Nelson Suburbs, Nomads United and Selwyn United. Some of the team in Mainland Football were formed recently by mergers between 2 other teams for example Cashmere Technical was formed by Woolston Technical and Cashmere Wanderers in 2012.

Mainland Football teams to watch

The past 10 years has seen only 2 different winners of the Mainland Premier League: Ferrymead Bays and Cashmere Technical, the latter of which have won 8 time since 2012. Other teams that have won the league before include Christchurch United, Halswell United, Nomads United and Nelson Suburbs. The safest team you could follow next competition looks to be Cashmere Technical, though it would be a good idea to keep an eye on any changes before the next Mainland Premier League season.
